the place of theatre in society. Into this environment McGuinness
transports Shakespeare, tired of struggling to make a living in the
theatre
in London and drawn to Ireland by promises of land and wealth.

Written in 1941, The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui is a political satire
about the making of a fascist that also re-tells the story of Hitler and
the
Nazi era. The play is set in 1920's Chicago and Brecht modeled the
plot and
characters on Al Capone's mafia rule in order to demonstrate the dangers
of
National Socialism and fascism. It is political theatre at its
very best
and most powerful.
